Trust Your Data: How an International Data Company Built Veracity

Three weeks ago, at the DataWorks Summit in Munich, we announced the Data Hero winners for the EMEA region. The winner in the Data Scientist category was Rene Castberg, Senior Researcher at DNV GL. You can read the announcement here.

DNV GL is headquartered in Oslo, Norway, and operates in over 100 counties. It provides services for several industries including maritime, renewable energy, oil & gas, electrification, food & beverage and healthcare.

DNV GL manages structured, sensor, and image data and produces batch and AI/Deep Learning analysis. The company uses Hortonworks both in the data center and in the cloud. Through using Hortonworks Data Platform (HDP®), DNV GL has developed Veracity, an industry data platform designed to help companies improve data quality and manage the ownership, security, sharing, and use of data. This platform would not have been possible without Apache™ Hadoop® and Hortonworks.

Rene was selected as a Data Hero for his many successful Big Data use cases within DNV GL, which range across the oil & gas, life sciences, energy, and maritime sectors. Successes include improvements to services and forward planning, automation of manual visual exploration, efficiency gains, monitoring and improving ship efficiency, optimizing surveyor utilization, and automating data ingest in a standard format for all datasets.

The most important use case Rene worked on was a joint development project to create an assurance framework enabling the use of Big Data analytics for condition monitoring and failure prediction for key systems and components from sensor data. Analysis of this data identified data quality as the barrier to gaining trustworthy intelligence from IoT products. This sparked a new initiative within DNV GL to improve data quality as part of their digitalization strategy.
