How Santander Bank’s Big Data Architecture is Providing Smooth Solutions for Clients

Next week is DataWorks Summit Tokyo (October 16th)! We have a number of impressive speakers lined up for keynote and breakout presentations, including Javier Nieto Centeno from Santander Bank.

Santander Bank offers an array of financial services and products including retail banking, mortgages, corporate banking, cash management, credit card, capital markets, trust and wealth management, and insurance. It has about 650 retail banking offices, over 2,000 ATMs, and employs approximately 9,800 people.

Javier will be speaking about how Banco Santander has established a Big Data architecture that provides the solutions that the bank demands, while satisfying local regulations. When working with big clients on important contracts, often the key differentiator is how smoothly you’re able to integrate your systems with the client’s systems that are already in place. Considering that banking is one of the most heavily regulated industries, this presents additional challenges.

Some of these challenges included figuring out the logical order of information transferred to the data lake, the unification of data lakes across all countries, and traceability of data.

Building a common architecture for all these systems was a large task, but now Santander has a common repository where all data can be stored and consolidated. While there is still work to be done, the team has determined a long-term plan and continues to make significant progress towards its goals.

When asked what they’re most looking forward to about DataWorks Summit San Jose, here’s what they had to say:

“We are looking forward to sharing our experience with other companies as others did with us, and we wish to gain visibility for the Big Data solution that we’ve created.

During past years we have been working on the creation of a Big Data architecture that provides all solutions that SCIB Banco Santander demands. Our business has some unique challenges, we have a large platform of legacy applications already installed and strong regulations we need to fulfill. We have learned a lot from other companies’ experiences and we think we are now in the position to share with others our architecture and how we solve various challenges faced during our Big Data adoption.

We are also eager to hear from other companies and experts about the solutions they have adopted for similar problems. DataWorks Summit is the perfect environment where we can achieve these goals.” -Javier Nieto Centeno, Innovation & Architecture, Santander Bank
